Some patients who are on regular medicines may be issued with repeat prescriptions without necessarily consulting a Doctor every time.

When repeat prescriptions are collected a computer print out of your medicines will be attached and should be filled in when ordering next time. Please tick the box of the medicine you require.

As standard you should allow at least 24 hours for your repeat prescription to be produced.  Also don't forget that the chemist may not have your medicine in stock every time.  It is important therefore to make sure you order your repeat prescription with plenty of time to spare.

Sometimes it is possible for repeat prescriptions to be done while you wait.  This is a special service that we offer subject to it being possible at the time. Sometimes it will not be possible and you will have to return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why is my medicine not on repeat?

A. It is standard practice when you start on any medication for it not to be put on repeat.  This is so we can make sure it is the right medication for you before giving it to you again.  Some medications need you to have a blood test after you have started on them.  Other medicines need more careful monitoring and so are not put on repeat by the doctor.  Finally some medicines automatically fall off repeat on the computer system.

If you feel one of your prescriptions should be on repeat then please speak to the doctor about this (either at your next appointment or by using a telephone appointment).  Please note that the reception staff cannot change details on your prescription

Q. Why do I have to see the doctor when my review date is up?

A. It is important for your health that if you are on regular medications you are seen regularly by the doctor.  Many tablets need to be monitored during their use.  This might be to check your blood pressure or using blood tests to make sure the medicine is working and not upsetting your system.  The review system is in place to make sure this happens.  It is there for your safety.  Also sometimes there are newer and better medication that you could be on.

Q. Why is my review date up when I only saw the doctor a few weeks ago?

A. There a a couple of possibilities when this happens.  It may be a mistake in the computer system or the doctor may have forgotten to change the date.  However it may be that you saw the doctor about something else and so it was not right for the doctor to change your review date.  If you have a lot of medical problems and are on many tablets then it may be that some have been reviewed but others not.

Q. How can I get my tablets if my review date is up?

A. It is important not to run out of your medication and stop taking it suddenly.  We also realise that patients often have busy lives and cannot always get to the doctor straight away. We therefore try to be as flexible as we can whilst maintaining safety.

If you always request your repeat prescription with plenty of time to spare then there will always be time for something to be sorted out so there is not a panic to get the prescription.  If it is last minute then the best thing is to make an appointment with the doctor (either to be seen in surgery or on the telephone).

Please note that the receptionists are not allowed to issue your prescription if your review date is up.  This is for your safety.
